Man Gets 15-Plus Years For Burning Pride Flag

An Iowa man will have a lot of time to reflect on how burning an LGBTQ flag in June wasn't the right move. The AP reports that Adolfo Martinez, 30, was convicted last month, and Wednesday he was sentenced to at least 15 years behind bars for an arson hate crime, with an additional 30 days tacked on for harassment, per Story County records.

The June 11 incident took place after Martinez got kicked out of the Dangerous Curves strip club in Ames and threatened to come back and burn the bar down, per an Ames Police Department spokesman.

Police were called to the scene shortly after midnight, which is when they found, burning in the street outside the bar, a car tire and a gay pride banner Martinez had ripped off the front of the Ames United Church of Christ, reported KCCI at the time.

The flag featured a rainbow design and read "God is still speaking." "We believe God is still speaking to us through the Bible and through each other ... and because of that we've been able to get to a place where we can affirm all of God's children, including queer people," said the Rev.

Eileen Gebbie, a church minister who herself is gay. Martinez told KCCI in June that he was "guilty as charged" and that it was his "honor" to burn the flag.

"It is a judgment and it's written to execute vengeance on the heathen," he said. The judge was all for the maximum sentence, as Martinez has a history of harassment.

"Nobody got shot [and] nobody was sexually assaulted," says Gebbie, who tells KCCI her church offered money to help with Martinez's legal bills and to take care of his three kids.

"It was a banner. How much does that hurt? But I had to reflect on the fear it created in our sanctuary."

Three women and six children lost their lives and several were injured in 

Monday's

 massacre.

The bloodshed happened in Sonora state, where the suspected cartel gunmen ambushed the families' convoy of three SUVs as they were on their way to see relatives in the U.S. The families targeted lived in a Mormon community about 70 miles south of Douglas, Ariz.

Pictures from the scene showed a vehicle with dozens of bullet holes. It was burnt out from a fire after a bullet apparently hit the gas tank and caused an explosion. Relatives were pictured standing around the wreckage, hugging each other and crying.

Two other mothers, Christina Marie Langford Johnson, 31, and Dawna Ray Langford, 43, along with Dawna’s two sons, 11-year-old Trevor Harvey Langford and 2-year-old Rogan Jay Langford, were all also shot to death. The two mothers were found in a separate location, according to relatives.

Johnson had reportedly stashed her 7-month-old daughter Faith, still strapped in her car seat, on the floor of the vehicle before she got out and raised her arms to show the gunmen the women and children weren’t a threat. Prosecutors said her body was found 15 yards away riddled with bullets.

Officials have said that the gunmen may have mistaken the group's large SUVs for those of a rival gang amid a vicious turf war.

The killers were apparently members of the Juarez drug cartel and its armed wing, La Linea — "The Line" — whose gunmen had entered Sinaloa cartel territory and set up an armed outpost on a hilltop and an ambush further up the road, The Associated Press reported.

The Juarez cartel apparently wanted to send a message that it controlled the road into Chihuahua. It was this invasion force that the American mothers and their three vehicles drove into.

It was only after the first vehicle was shot up and set afire that 50 or 60 Sinaloa cartel gunmen showed up to see what had happened.

But Johnson’s sacrifice saved the life of her daughter, Faith, who was miraculously found unharmed.

Seven other children survived the massacre thanks to the courage of a 13-year-old boy, Devin Langford. After witnessing the deaths of his mother and two brothers, he hid his bleeding siblings in nearby bushes while he made the 6-hour, 14-mile trek back to La Mora to get help, Miller said.

Cody, 8, was shot in the jaw and leg, bleeding profusely. His 14-year-old sister, Kylie, was shot in the foot. Zander, 4, was shot in the back and 9-month-old Brixon was shot in the chest.

Mexican authorities airlifted the wounded children to a hospital in the U.S., where they were in “stable” condition, according to Sonora state health officials.

For those who don’t know our history, Oath Keepers has successfully provided volunteer security at numerous events across the nation in the past three years, including twice in Berkeley, CA; in Portland, OR (where we provided a PSD escort for the Multnomah County Republican Party Chair, who otherwise would not have felt safe to speak at the rally); Boston, MA; Washington D.C. (three times, including Inauguration Day, 2017); in New York City; and we provided event security and PSD escorts for high profile speakers for ACT for America at dozens of their “March Against Sharia” events nationwide in 2017. Oath Keepers has had volunteer security escorts on the ground at three Trump rallies to date this year: Rio Rancho, NM;  Minneapolis, MN; and Dallas, TX.  Now we will be in Tupelo, MS on Nov. 1, and Lexington, KY on Nov. 4. In each instance we successfully escorted many Trump supporters safely back to their vehicles. In Rio Rancho, NM, we worked closely with bikers from Sons of Liberty Riders (SOLR) and some independent bikers. One of our combat veteran volunteers directly stopped one unhinged leftist who tried to assault a disabled veteran in his 80s who was waiting in the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) line to get into the event (yes, really). Our alert veteran stepped in between and shut that down before it could even happen. Unfortunately, that same leftist then moved to another part of the ADA line and did, in fact, assault a disabled woman and was then arrested. At the Rio Rancho Rally we also provided a special PSD escort for Angel Family activists Mary Ann Mendoza and Steve Ronnebeck, driving them to the venue, escorting them into the VIP section of the rally, and then driving them back out afterwards. We then provided security escorts for rally attendees at both the Minneapolis and Dallas rallies, and successfully escorted many people safety to their vehicles. We can say that none of the people we escorted in MN or TX were assaulted.   Not a hair on their head was touched.  But we simply didn’t have enough volunteers to cover all areas in a very dispersed urban environment (in both cases) and violent leftists were still able to assault some people in areas where our teams were not present.  That is very frustrating for us because we know that would NOT have happened to those people if we had had enough volunteers to be able to escort them all.  The lesson from that is that we need more volunteers! So step up and help at future Trump rallies! Many hands make light work. A side note on medical: each of our teams at past rallies had a dedicated medic attached (military combat medic veterans, civilian EMTs, or a trauma nurse) and in Minneapolis one of our medics was able to treat a lady who had been pepper sprayed by leftist protesters. Our medic flushed out her eyes and treated her face, and our team escorted her to safety. Every venue is different, and presents different challenges.  With our volunteer security operation at the recent Rio Rancho, NM Trump Rally, the parking lots were right there at the expansive venue site out in the open desert, and it was far easier for us to keep everyone safe as they returned to their vehicles. In Minneapolis and Dallas, in sharp contrast, Trump supporters had to walk blocks in many directions through the city streets to reach their vehicles. Oath Keeper assisting Trump supporters in Dallas.  Grant Kauffman, 12 Rounds Media Antifa’s normal M.O. is to harass, assault, and distract police with one of their “black block” formations (often throwing rocks, bottles, etc at police and setting fires) and then seek out vulnerable individuals for a gang beating of three or four on one, often with a masked Antifa hitting the victim in the head with a hard object, such as a bike lock, and then disappearing back into the “black block” of identically clad Antifa, making it difficult to find the perp. The rhetoric of the left has only intensified since 2016, labeling all Trump supporters ( even if they are Hispanic or black) as “supporters of white supremacy”, “racist” and “fascist” just for wanting a secure border and wanting our immigration laws enforced. There were many patriotic Mexican-American Trump supporters at the Rio Rancho rally, just as at least half the crowd at the El Paso Trump rally in February were Hispanic. But that reality doesn’t faze the Marxist ideology/identity politics obsessed leftists who insist that to be patriotic or conservative is equivalent to being a “Nazi” or a member of the KKK, and who therefor justify shutting down the free speech of other Americans through violence. Because of this unfortunate reality, Oath Keepers and our allies will be on the ground in both Mississippi an in Kentucky to help provide volunteer security escorts for rally attendees as they go into the rally and as they leave the rally and return to their vehicles. We expect to do this at Trump rallies from now until Election Day, 2020. It is critical that we preserve the free speech and political assembly rights of our fellow Americans. Our republican form of government is in peril when Americans don’t feel safe to attend a political rally.  That’s why we need YOU to step up and help.
