NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS VOLUME 23, NUMBER 25   NEWS NRA Stood By Due Process, Rule of Law in Senate Showdown America witnessed a remarkable and telling legislative showdown this week that revolved around a very simple concept underlying American democracy. That concept is due process. Some were willing to discard it for the sake of politics and the illusion of safety. Others were not.   NEWS Supreme Court Declines to Review Gun Bans On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review lower court decisions upholding sweeping bans on popular semiautomatic firearms enacted in Connecticut and New York in the wake of the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. The high court last December took a pass in a similar case originating out of Highland Park, a Chicago suburb. Justices Thomas and Scalia filed a written dissent from that earlier decision, stating, “noncompliance with our Second Amendment precedents warrants this Court’s attention as much as any of our precedents ….”   NEWS Guilty Plea and Charges Announced in NYPD Handgun Licensing Corruption Case Back in April, NRA-ILA alerted readers to a federal corruption probe involving the New York Police Department’s License Division and allegations that some of its officers were issuing handgun licenses in exchange for bribes. On Monday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced the arrest of a former supervisor at the NYPD’s Licensing Division on charges relating to this matter.   NEWS EU Moves Forward with Plan to Restrict Semi-Autos While perhaps not the most publicized recent development regarding the European Union, in recent weeks the political bloc has pushed forward with its plans to severely curtail gun rights across its 27 member states. On June 10, the European Council endorsed a version of the proposed changes to the European Firearms Directive pushed by the European Commission late last year in the wake of terrorist violence. The European Parliament still has a chance to weigh in on the issue, with a final vote scheduled for later this year.   NEWS Seeking Nominations for 2015 NRA-ILA Volunteer Awards The NRA-ILA "Jay M. He affirmed the organization's absolute stance against arming suspected terrorists and argued against the effectiveness of so-called "assault weapons" bans.   The AR-15: Americans' Best Defense Against Terror and Crime After the attack at Pulse night club in Orlando, Hillary Clinton looked past the obvious enemy – radical Islamic terror – and instead said "weapons of war have no place on our streets" and that we need to ban AR-15s immediately. AR-15s are fine for Hillary and her family. They've been protected by armed guards who use them for three decades. But average Americans who watch the news and feel genuine fear for their safety, and their families’ safety—Hillary wants to deny them the level of protection she insists upon herself.   Wayne LaPierre On Hannity NRA Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre appeared on Hannity to discuss the escalating state of readiness that Americans must be in to defend against radical Islamic terror. He blamed the nation’s increased vulnerability on politically correct policies pursued by the Obama administration, dismissing the current gun control narrative as a distraction from what needs to be done.​   The Truth About the Terror Watchlist Irresponsible politicians and their media friends have suggested that the NRA wants to make it easier for terrorists to obtain firearms. This isn't just wrong, it's infuriating. NRA members have given their lives fighting this war on terror. When it comes to national security, we take a backseat to no one. If an investigation uncovers evidence of terrorist activity or involvement, the government should be allowed to immediately go to court, block the sale and arrest the terrorist. We must also uphold due process protections that allow law-abiding Americans who are wrongly put on a watchlist to be removed. The NRA will not let President Obama and Hillary Clinton distract attention away from their repeated failure to keep us safe. They apologize for America and our way of life, and accuse you of bigotry if you call the enemy who they are—"radical Islamic terrorists." Make no mistake—the NRA will fight without apology to protect the rights of law-abiding Americans to defend themselves.
